Women’s Welfare and Health Activities in Cebu
A woman plays a vital role in community development. She could be a life-giver, a nurturer, a teacher and perhaps a leader and decision maker. More often than not, her role as agent and at the same time as beneficiary of development is put on the back seat. With the passage of Republic Act No. 6949 , an Act declaring March 8 of every year as National Women’s Day and Proclamations 224 and 227; declaring the first week of March as Women’s Week and March as Women’s Role in History Month, the essence of being a woman was given importance. It is the time when all activities are geared to look into the issues covering women’s health, women’s awareness to health services and more explorations that are focused on improving reproductive health.
The PCUP – Visayas spearheaded a series of fora on Women’s Health Awareness. It was conducted in coordination with Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. – Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (RAFI – EJACC). It focuses on the awareness on the prevention of women’s diseases and the different kinds of diseases on women’s reproductive organs. A total of two hundred twenty-five (225) women from eighty-eight (88) urban poor organizations (UPOs) of Cebu City Central, North and South, Toledo City and Talisay City attended the Forum on Women’s Health Awareness and eventually availed of the free health services. To get the absolute completeness of the program, a Papanicolaou (PAP) Smear Screening and Breast Examination was also done later after the series of fora. Fortunately, nobody tested positive of the four hundred sixteen (416) women who underwent the two (2) medical exams.
